The foundations are stated to be on hard red olay which should
be satisfactory.
No. 43. This is a double 12-ft. span girder bridge over a
waterway. The foundations are stated to be on hard yellow clay
which may be regarded as satisfactory.
No. 44.
There is no bridge bearing this number.
Mo. 45. This is a double 20-ft. span girder bridge, over
a waterway. From the note on the drawing as to the nature of
the foundations, we recommend that a boring be taken.
No. 46. This is a 3-span girder bridge, 20-ft. spën. Here
also we recommend that a boring be taken.
No. 47. This is a 5-span girder bridge over the river at
Fu T1 Au,
one centre span of 60 ft. and four side spans of 20
feet. che foundations have been piled throughout with Chine
fir piles of 8 to 11 feet in length. We are very doubtful of
the efficiency of these piles and therefore recon end that
borings be taken to obtain more reliable information as to the
nature of the ground.
General. Time has not permitted of the completion of the
borings which we consider necessary in order to enable us to
express an opinion on the sufficiency of the foundations, which
appear to be genorally the unsatisfactory part of the bridges,
and we have therefore confined ourselves to recommending, in the
course of the latter part of our report, where, in our opinion,
the taking of borings is advisable.
noted on
Having regard to the nature of the ground
the drawings, we consider that, in the ease of several of the bridges in the section north of the Kowloon range of hills, the thickness of the concrete foundations is somewhat in- “adequate. We have alluded to this point in connection with No. 10 Bridge, which is by far the most important of those contain-
-ing a defect of this nature.
